There are many benefits from taking advantage of a study abroad program. Here are five of them.
Gain insights. When you study abroad, you have the opportunity to meet people that have a background that is very different from yours. Because of this difference, they will have different viewpoints, thought processes, and feelings than you do. When you develop a relationship with the people, you gain a new perspective about the country, about your education, about the world, and about life.
Eliminate stereotypes. By getting to know other people in their indigenous setting, you learn how they truly live. You learn how they think and feel. Our perception of other cultures is influenced by the media. While some of the information it portrays may be true, you never truly know and understand a culture until you have lived in it and personally gotten to know its people.
Make new friends. Many people don’t go out of their way to make new friends. A study abroad experience throws you into a whole new group of people. Your associations can enrich your life and grow into a deep friendship that can span over the miles when you return home.
Improve your language skills. Sitting in a classroom learning a foreign language builds a false sense of knowledge. You are talking to people with similar language skills. You are all on the same level of ability. It’s a different situation when you are in the actual country and talk to native speakers. They talk so fast! Living in a foreign country and speaking with native speakers is the best way to improve your language skills. (Be sure to have patience with yourself. Remember, you are in the learning phase!)
Broaden your horizons. There are beautiful and amazing places to see and appreciate in the world. Seeing these places in real life is so much better than viewing them in a picture. Each country and community has historical importance. By living in that country, you will get a deeper knowledge of the history and culture of the country. Your perspective of the country, of the world, and of your part in it will dramatically change.
